Every year on August 15th, crocheters take to Instagram to post a close-up photo of a granny square they have made.
Started by Susan Regalia in 2014 and now run by Simply Crochet magazine, the idea is to create a virtual granny square blanket by uniting photos of individual squares with a hashtag.
To take part, all you need to do is post your close-up photo with the hashtag #GrannySquareDay2020.
Here’s my top tips for taking part:
- Make sure your photo is square, straight on, and your square fills the frame
- Make sure you post the photo to the correct hashtag
- If you have more than one square, post them separately
- Don’t post anything that isn’t a granny square to the hashtag
If you have projects that have used granny squares and want to share the love on Granny Square Day, use the hashtag #GrannySquareMakes2020. This way the official hashtag will only be granny squares, creating a beautiful virtual blanket.
I am a huge fan of granny squares – the traditional look combined with the vast opportunities to personalise and create different effects through colour is just the thing for a technically simple project with huge creative scope.
