Dark Light

The Christmas Eve Cast On is a lovely little tradition that has been going for a few years now.

The specifics of the concept vary between different social spaces, but the general idea is to choose a short, simple project to cast on – on Christmas Eve, obviously! – and take some quiet time to reflect on the season.

Many people choose socks, and there are tons of beautiful kits available from artful hand dyers – usually a 100g skein of fingering weight yarn suitable for socks and a coordinating 20g mini for contrast heels and toes.

Here’s my confession: I have never knit a sock. Never tried. The thing is, I really don’t like feet. Not mine, not anyone else’s. There’s something about them that’s just icky. So the thought of knitting something for a body part that’s so unworthy never quite sat right with me.

Well, I’ve decided to change that this year. I’m going to take up the mantle of the Christmas Eve Cast-On and knit my first pair of socks. In fact I’m going to go down something of a sock rabbit hole, really dig into the construction and methods and sizing of it, so that I can design my first pair. Next year, I’d love to see others taking up the Christmas Eve Cast-On with MY pattern.

With that in mind, I’m eyeballing all these beautiful kits and wondering what my first pair should look like.

Have you found a kit that’s begging to be on your feet? Do you have an awesome sock knitting tip? I’d love to hear about it!

  1. Enjoy the knitting and the research. There are so many ways to knit socks so my tip would be to find what suits you to knit and to wear. Hand knitted socks are a thing of joy and beauty to knit and to wear!!

  2. I fell in love with knitting socks this year!
Only started knitting last December and cast on my first pair of socks in January… My aim for next year is to knit a pair every month. They are such a fun project and I love wearing home made socks at home.
