Dark Light

Knitting • £5

Idlewild is the name Anne of Green Gables gives to the playhouse she shares with Diana, set amongst a ring of white birch trees in what Anne describes as “the most romantic spot”. Romantic is right; in deep red with tiny spots of pink and with ever-deepening rings of petal lace, Idlewild nods to the beauty of nature.

The same petal lace and deep red yarn were used to knit Roseability, a garment design of mine (coming in July!), which is named after a song by the band Idlewild. The two patterns are intrinsically linked – one might even say kindred spirits.

Materials

• approx. 369 yards (338 meters) DK weight yarn
• 4mm needles (or size needed for gauge), suitable for working both flat and in the round using your preferred method – I used 20″ / 51cm circulars throughout
• 2 stitch markers, to note the selvedge edges
• tapestry needle, to weave in ends
• your preferred blocking equipment
• optional: crochet hook, the same size as your needles, and a locking stitch marker

Sizing

Idlewild is initially worked flat using a half-pi construction, then is joined to work in the round. It’s designed to be worn like a “backwards shawl”, without any of the fuss of securing the ends.

Note: The front of Idlewild will naturally droop lower after blocking, as shown on the schematic below, because of the opening for your head to pass through. This is nothing to worry about; aim to block it as a 1/4 circle 20″ / 51cm high & wide, and let it fall how it wants to.
