“Trees fall for both storms and the wind, leaving behind seeds and saplings so a version of them can grow again.” – Notes on Survival, Nikita Gill

Like its hat partner Sapling, Seedling is full of optimism. A little sprout flourishes up the back of the hand, flanked by a field of simple stockinette. Knit in 4-ply yarn, it’s perfect for keeping the chill off without being too bulky and only needs a small amount of yarn – I made both the mitt and hat samples from the same 100g hank with plenty left over.

Materials

• 104-214 yards (94-196 meters) 4-ply weight yarn
• 2.5mm needles (or size needed for gauge), suitable for working in the round using your preferred method
• 2mm needles (or needles 0.5mm smaller than above)
• 3 stitch markers, 1 of which you can tell apart from the others (to note the beginning of the round)
• scrap yarn, or other tool for putting stitches on hold
• your preferred blocking equipment

Sizing

Seedling comes in five sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL). I recommend around 1″ / 2.5cm negative ease (after blocking, based on measurement A). If you are between sizes, sizing down will give you a closer fit and sizing up will give you a looser fit – it’s entirely your preference!

A: 5 (6, 7, 8, 9)” / 12.5 (15, 17.5, 20, 22.5) cm
B: 6 (6.25, 6.25, 6.75, 7.25)” / 15 (15.5, 15.5, 17, 18) cm
C: 1.75 (1.75, 1.75, 1.75, 2.25)” / 4.5 (4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 5.5) cm
D: 1.75 (2, 2, 2.25, 2.25)” / 4.5 5, 5, 5, 5.5) cm
E: 2″ / 5cm
F: 2.75″ / 7cm
G: 3″ / 7.5cm

The pattern includes instructions to customise lengths D, E, and C. Customising any of these will also affect measurement B. There are also instructions to add 1″ / 2.5cm to measurement G, if required.
